Phosphate Test for Fresh and Saltwater — Prevent Algae Growth by Monitoring Phosphate

Sera PO₄-Test — approx. 60 measurements, quick and easy results

Level: Easy — Simple to use. Results within minutes.

Phosphate (PO₄) is a nutrient for plants in small quantities, but an excess is the main cause of algae growth in aquariums. Fish waste and overfeeding are common causes of elevated phosphate levels. The Sera PO₄-Test provides quick and easy insight into the current phosphate level — in both fresh and saltwater. Sufficient for approx. 60 measurements.

✂️ Usage Tips

Test the phosphate level regularly, especially with algae problems. If the phosphate level is too high: perform partial water changes, feed less or less frequently, and use Sera Phosvec Granulat to actively remove phosphate from the filter.

💡 Tip

Combine the PO₄-Test with the Sera FE-Test for a complete picture of the nutrient balance in your planted aquarium — iron up, phosphate down is the ideal recipe against algae.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is an acceptable phosphate level?
In a planted freshwater aquarium, aim for less than 0.1 mg/l. In an aquarium without plants, it can be slightly higher, but keep it below 0.5 mg/l to limit algae growth.

How do I lower the phosphate level?
Use Sera Phosvec Granulat in the filter for sustainable phosphate removal. Combine with less feeding and regular water changes.

How often should I test the phosphate level?
For algae problems: weekly. For a stable aquarium: monthly is sufficient.
