Keep as a pair or harem in an aquarium of at least 120 cm, with hard, alkaline water typical of Lake Malawi. As a mouthbrooder, the female carries the eggs and larvae in her mouth cavity for a period for protection. Feed primarily plant-based food, as this species is herbivorous. Provide plenty of rock formations and crevices as territory.
