Neon Tetra

Level: Easy — one of the most popular and beginner-friendly aquarium fish.

The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon Innesi) gets its name from its striking, bright blue stripe reminiscent of neon lighting. In the wild, this species swims in enormous schools of sometimes thousands of individuals — together they resemble one large fish, which deters predators. One of the most popular aquarium fish in the hobby.

✂️ Care

Keep in a school of at least 10 individuals — the larger the group, the calmer and more beautiful their swimming behavior. Please note: do not keep this small fish with larger predatory fish, otherwise it risks ending up as a snack. Notably: the bright neon colors fade at night when the fish sleeps, as a natural protection against predators.

🐠 Combination tip

Peaceful and well-suited for combination with other calm community fish such as corydoras and dwarf gouramis. Avoid larger or predatory species.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Why does my fish's color fade at night?
The bright neon colors fade when the fish sleeps — a clever natural adaptation to be less noticeable to predators.

What is the minimum number of individuals I should buy?
At least 10 individuals — in the wild, Neon Tetras swim in enormous schools, and in an aquarium, they also feel most comfortable in a large group.

Can I breed this fish?
Breeding Neon Tetras is possible but not easy — it requires a separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water and a dark environment with fine-leaved plants.
