Neon Tetra

Paracheirodon innesi – Neontetra

The Neon Tetra is one of the most popular aquarium fish in our wonderful hobby. With a maximum length of about 5 cm, this species is suitable for almost any community tank. Just be careful not to keep them with larger predatory fish—they risk becoming snack fish.

Did you know that in the wild, neon tetras swim in enormous schools, sometimes numbering thousands? This group formation offers protection from predators: together they resemble one large fish, which can deter potential predators.

The name Neon Tetra comes from their striking, bright blue color, reminiscent of neon lights. Interestingly, these bright colors fade at night when the fish sleeps—a clever way to be less noticeable to predators.

Breeding behavior

Breeding neon tetras in a home aquarium is possible, but not always easy. These fish are egg-laying and require specific conditions to reproduce. A separate breeding tank is highly recommended, with soft, acidic water (pH around 6.0) and a water temperature of approximately 24–25°C.

Provide a dark environment and add fine-leaved plants or a nesting grid to prevent the eggs from being eaten immediately. The parents often eat their own eggs. The female lays up to 100 eggs, which usually hatch after 24–36 hours. The fry are very small and fragile; they should be fed infusoria or special dust food for growing fish larvae.

Breeding Neon Tetras requires some experience and patience, but it is a fascinating process for those who dare to take on this challenge.
