Asian Fan Hand Shrimp

The Asian Fan Shrimp, also known as Atyopsis Moluccensis, is a popular shrimp species - easy to care for and an eye-catcher in any aquarium.

Origin and size

This species originates from cooler, fast-flowing streams in Malaysia and only reproduces in brackish water. The Asian Fan Shrimp grows to about 12 cm and can be kept in an aquarium from 60 cm.

Care and water parameters

Fan shrimp feel most comfortable in a small group. Keep the water temperature between 15°C and 25°C, and the pH between 6.5 and 8.0.

Feeding

Fan shrimp extract their nutrients from the water with their distinctive 'fan hands'. They like to sit on a piece of wood or stone in an open spot with sufficient current, so they can filter fine (dust) food from the water.

Molting

Like other shrimp species, the Asian Fan Shrimp molts regularly. Do not remove the discarded exoskeleton from the aquarium - it is a good food source for the shrimp itself.
