Microsorum Pteropus 'Latifolia' - Broad-leaved Java Fern with Largest Leaves

The Microsorum Pteropus 'Latifolia', also known as the Broad-Leaf Java Fern, has the largest fronds of all Microsorum species. This impressive fern boasts long, broad fronds in a bright green with characteristic dark green veins that create beautiful leaf markings. Reaching a maximum height of 50 cm, the Latifolia is perfect for the back of larger aquariums and creates a spectacular, lush effect.

Why choose Microsorum Pteropus 'Latifolia'?

  • Largest Leaves: The largest of all Microsorum species
  • Impressive appearance: Long and wide leaves for a spectacular effect
  • Beautiful leaf pattern: Dark green vein creates a characteristic pattern
  • Bright green color: Fresh, vibrant appearance
  • Perfect for large aquariums: Maximum 50 cm high, ideal for the back area
  • Very robust: Resistant to most fish
  • Easy to maintain: Normal light required
  • Versatile placement: On wood, stone or with rhizome above substrate

Care and Placement

The Microsorum Pteropus 'Latifolia' is a rhizome plant, meaning its rootstock (rhizome) must ALWAYS protrude above the substrate. This is crucial—if the rhizome is left in the substrate, the plant will slowly die. You can use the plant in several ways:

  • On decoration: Attach with thin wire or aquarium glue to large driftwood or stones
  • Back Zone: Perfect as a background plant in larger aquariums
  • As a focal point: The large leaves immediately attract attention
  • Groupings: Combine multiple plants for a lush, forest-like effect

The plant grows slowly and, over time, naturally attaches itself to the decorative material with its roots. The large leaves are best suited to larger aquariums of 100 liters or more.

Combination tips

Combine Microsorum Pteropus 'Latifolia' with smaller Microsorum varieties such as Microsorum Petite (front zone) and Microsorum Narrow Leaf (middle zone) for a perfect layered effect. It also pairs well with Anubias species for a beautiful contrast between fern-like and broad leaves. For a natural Asian habitat, combine the plant with Cryptocoryne species and large driftwood. The large leaves create a beautiful contrast with fine-leaved plants.

Note: NEVER plant the rhizome in the substrate—the rhizome must always protrude above the substrate, otherwise the plant will slowly die! This plant is best suited for larger aquariums where the large leaves are shown to their best advantage.
