Level: Easy — Nymphoides Aquatica 'Banana' (Banana Plant) is a unique, low-maintenance plant.

The genus name 'Nymphoides' refers to its similarities with the water lily (Nymphaea). This plant from America gets its nickname 'Banana Plant' from its banana-shaped roots, in which it stores nutrients. The leaves are green on top and usually have a wine-red to purple color on the underside. When it blooms, the plant forms a small flower with five white petals on the water surface.

✂️ Care

Plant the largest root of the 'bunch of bananas' for a maximum of 1/3 into the substrate, without damaging the roots — this prevents rot. Normal roots will eventually grow on the plant, securing it further. Do you only have gravel or sand? Then place tablet-form plant food under the root tuber. You can also let the plant float, but then liquid plant food is a requirement — the plant will then naturally form new, regular roots that search for the bottom.

💡 Planter's tip

Naturally, this plant doesn't need much light, but it grows best — and blooms most often — with plenty of light and possibly CO₂ addition.
