Hygrophila Pinnatifida - Unique Aquarium Plant with Characteristic Leaf Structure

Hygrophila Pinnatifida is a striking aquarium plant from India with a unique, deeply incised leaf structure that instantly adds depth and texture to your aquascape. This unique, medium-sized plant combines a compact growth habit with a beautiful color palette ranging from green to reddish-brown, depending on light intensity and nutrients.

What makes Hygrophila Pinnatifida so special is its versatility: you can plant this plant in the ground or attach it to hardscape like rocks and wood. Its slow growth and compact shape make it an ideal choice for aquascapers who want control over their layout.

Benefits of Hygrophila Pinnatifida

  • Versatile: Plant in the ground as a mid-ground plant or attach to hardscape for an epiphytic effect.
  • Unique leaf texture: Deeply cut, feathery leaves create a distinctive visual effect that contrasts with other plant species
  • Beautiful color development: Develops intense reddish brown to purple hues under strong light and CO2 administration
  • Compact, controlled growth: Remains relatively low (10-15 cm) and forms dense, attractive clumps without spreading.
  • Perfect for aquascaping: Excellent for Iwagumi, Nature Aquarium and Dutch Style layouts
  • Suitable for different levels: Beginners can grow the plant successfully, while experienced aquascapers can optimize the color and shape.

Care & Placement

Hygrophila Pinnatifida thrives in moderate to strong light (0.5-1 watt per liter) and benefits greatly from CO2 supplementation for optimal color development and compact growth. Plant in nutrient-rich soil or attach to hardscape with fishing line or superglue gel. The plant will naturally attach itself with adhesive roots after a few weeks.

For the most beautiful colors, we recommend regular fertilization with iron and micronutrients. Prune old leaves at the base to encourage new, healthy growth. You can easily propagate the plant by cutting off side shoots and replanting them.
