sturgeons
Sturgeons have become popular pond fish over the years.
They have a beautiful exotic appearance, are easy to tame and are insensitive to diseases and parasites.
A sturgeon is supposed to be easy to keep and just as strong as a normal goldfish. This will make you think that this is an ideal pond fish, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Sturgeons are special fish that require special care. Below are a few wishes to take into account when purchasing/keeping sturgeons.
- The pond water must be (stable) cool, flowing, clear and oxygen-rich
- Sturgeons should be fed several times a day with special sturgeon food
- A large pond is a must. Not only because sturgeons can grow to be meters long, but also because this species of fish only swims forward. They therefore need a lot of free space to be able to swim and grow.
- To determine the size of your pond, you should use approximately 10 times the body length of the fish. A sturgeon with a length of 40cm therefore needs a pond of at least 4 meters long.
- The edges and bottom of a sturgeon pond should be kept free of plants, decorations and other additions. This is to prevent the sturgeon from getting stuck and/or injured. Also, filamentous algae are known to suffocate sturgeon.
Water quality:
Sturgeons definitely need clean, flowing, clear and oxygen-rich water, preferably water with a low temperature. The preference is therefore for a pond in a shady place, where the water does not get too warm. If your pond is mainly in the sun, it is better not to keep sturgeons.
Power supply:
Sturgeons need special sinking food, with an extra high content of proteins and vitamins. Do you have other pond inhabitants besides sturgeons? Then pay attention that a sturgeon is not agile, this species swims slowly and has poor eyesight. This will ensure that the other fish in your pond have eaten the sturgeon food from the bottom before the sturgeon has noticed it.
It is therefore important that you keep a close eye on whether the sturgeon is getting enough nutrition.
Since sturgeons are easy and quick to tame, you can teach them certain things, such as accepting food. Think of feeding from an open hand or feeding the sturgeon on one side of the pond and the other fish on the other side.
Sturgeons need sufficient food per day, but never feed them too much at once. Better to feed them a little 3 times a day than too much at once. Sturgeons have a short digestive system and feeding them too much at once can lead to constipation.
Read up before you buy a new fish species. Do you want to keep one or more sturgeons in your pond? Then it is important to meet the above requirements.
Below you will find some general information about two sturgeon species from our range.
Albino Sturgeon:
- Bright white color
- Pointed and streamlined angular muzzle
- Red eyes
- Maximum length of approximately 100 to 150 cm
Albino sturgeons are also called 'Albino Sterlet'. They are real bottom fish and search the bottom of the pond all day long. Because of the bright white color of the sturgeon, it is very easy to see on dark pond liner.
The condition is completely clear, oxygenated and flowing water. They originally occur in the Danube and Volga rivers.
Diamond sturgeon:
- Dark gray with a white belly and fin edges
- Three rows of white bone plates on the back
- Pointed snout
- Can reach a length of up to 5 meters in the wild, weighing 500kg
Diamond sturgeon is a Russian sturgeon and is also called 'Acipenser Gueldenstaedti'.
This sturgeon is native to the Black Sea, Caspian Sea and Sea of Azoz.
What you really need to consider with this sturgeon species is its eventual size. If you provide this species with the desired care and space, it will remain healthy and grow into a giant.
