Keeping a Corn Snake: Complete Guide for Beginners

The corn snake (Pantherophis obsoletus) is one of the most popular pet snakes in the world—and an excellent choice for beginners. They are robust, calm in temperament, and forgiving of minor care mistakes. With the right setup, a corn snake can be a fascinating companion for 15–20 years.

What is a Corn Snake?

Originating from North America, the corn snake lives in forests, meadows, and rocky areas. They grow to 120–180 cm long (sometimes up to 200 cm) and are crepuscular and nocturnal. In the wild, they primarily eat small rodents—hence the name.

Suitable for: beginners who are comfortable with snakes
Not suitable for: people with ophidiophobia or those unwilling to handle frozen mice

The Terrarium—Size and Setup

Minimum Dimensions

Age Minimum Terrarium Size
Juvenile (0–6 months) 60x40x40 cm
Sub-adult (6–18 months) 90x45x45 cm
Adult (2 years+) 120x60x60 cm (final size)

Tip: Corn snakes are excellent escape artists. Always ensure a securely latching lid.

Setup

Corn snakes are semi-arboreal—they love to climb. Provide them with plenty of structure and cover.

Tip: Use a heat mat with a thermostat under one-third of the terrarium—never a heat mat without a thermostat.

The Repto Light Stand Adhesive offers stable lamp mounting without drilling.

Humidity

Corn snakes need moderate humidity: 40–60%. This can be temporarily higher during shedding. Use the Repto Pressure Sprayer 1L for light misting during shedding.

Feeding—Simple and Predictable

Corn snakes eat rodents exclusively. Always use thawed, pre-warmed mice or rats—live prey is unnecessary and can injure the animal.

Corn snake feeding – feeding tongs and thawed mouse

Age Prey Item Frequency
Juvenile (0–6 months) Pinky mouse Every 5–7 days
Sub-adult (6–18 months) Fuzzy / hopper mouse Every 7 days
Adult (2 years+) Adult mouse or small rat Every 10–14 days

Rule: The prey item should be a maximum of 1.5x the thickness of the snake's thickest part.

  • Always feed outside the terrarium or use feeding tongs
  • Wait 48 hours after feeding before handling
  • A snake refusing to eat is often in shed—wait until shedding is complete

Maintenance & Hygiene

  • Daily: change water, remove waste
  • Weekly: partial cleaning of decor and glass walls
  • Monthly: full cleaning of the terrarium and substrate

Use the Repto Glass Cleaner for glass walls—no chemical residues, safe for your pet.

Behavior & Handling

Corn snakes are generally calm and quickly become tame. Start with short sessions of 5–10 minutes and gradually increase duration.

  • Never handle within 48 hours of feeding—risk of regurgitation
  • Never handle during shedding
  • Always support the entire body—never hold only the head
  • An S-shaped posture or hissing = warning sign, give the animal space

Shedding

Corn snake shedding – shedding on cork branches

Corn snakes shed 4–6 times a year. Signs: dull bluish skin, cloudy eyes, reduced appetite. Temporarily increase humidity with the Repto Pressure Sprayer. After shedding, check that the skin has come off in one piece—including the eye caps.

Common Mistakes

No secured lid. Corn snakes escape through the smallest gaps.

Heat mat without thermostat. This can lead to burns.

Live prey. Unnecessary and dangerous—a mouse can severely injure the snake.

Handling too soon. Give a new snake at least 2 weeks to acclimatize.
