Starter kit for your first reptile: what do you really need?
First, choose your species
Not every reptile is suitable for beginners. The species determines what equipment you will need.
| Species | Difficulty | Space needed | Daytime temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leopard Gecko | ⭐ Easy | 60x40x40 cm | 28–32°C (basking spot) |
| Bearded Dragon | ⭐⭐ Moderate | 120x60x60 cm | 35–42°C (basking spot) |
| Corn Snake | ⭐ Easy | 90x45x45 cm | 28–30°C |
| Green Iguana | ⭐⭐⭐ Advanced | Very large | 35–40°C |
Tip: Start with a Leopard Gecko or Corn Snake if you don't have experience yet.

Basic equipment — what you always need
Terrarium
The foundation of everything. Buy the correct size directly — too small is the most common mistake. A Leopard Gecko needs at least 60x40x40 cm; a Bearded Dragon needs at least 120x60x60 cm.
UV lamp & heat lamp
Reptiles are cold-blooded and need external heat sources. UV-B lamps are essential for diurnal species like the Bearded Dragon — without UV-B, they cannot produce vitamin D3, leading to bone problems.
Lamp stand
Proper mounting of your lamp is crucial for safety and the correct distance to the animal. The Repto Light Stand Adhesive offers a stable, adhesive mounting solution without drilling.
Thermometer & hygrometer
You cannot estimate temperature and humidity. Always measure — on both the warm and cool sides of the terrarium.
Substrate
Depending on the species: coconut fiber, reptile sand, or a bioactive substrate. Avoid gravel and wood chips for most species.
Hides
Every reptile needs at least two hides: one on the warm side, one on the cool side. This is not a luxury — it's a basic requirement for welfare.
Water dish
Always present, always clean. Size depends on the species.
Interior & ambiance — where we excel

A well-decorated terrarium is not just beautiful — it reduces stress for your animal. Plants (even artificial ones) provide cover and a sense of security.
Our Repto Plant assortment offers a wide range of realistic artificial plants that are safe for reptiles and easy to clean:
- Repto Plant Hanging Hedra 65 cm — ideal as hanging cover along the back wall
- Repto Plant Standing Elephant Ear — large leaves for extra hiding opportunities
- Repto Plant in Deco Begonia — decorative and compact, perfect for smaller terrariums
- Repto Plant Vines Red & Green Fern 60 cm — climbing plants for a natural look
Humidity & misting
Many reptiles require specific humidity levels — especially during shedding. Too dry air leads to incomplete shedding, which can be painful and dangerous.
-
Repto Rainmaker 8500 — automatic misting system for species that need higher humidity (e.g., Crested Gecko, chameleon)
- Repto Pressure Sprayer 1L — convenient handheld sprayer for daily misting of walls and plants
Nutrition & supplements
Diet varies greatly by species:
- Insectivores (Leopard Gecko, Bearded Dragon): crickets, mealworms, superworms — always dusted with calcium and vitamin D3
- Omnivores (Bearded Dragon): also vegetables and fruit
- Snakes: mice or rats (live or thawed)
The Repto Fruit Snack Holder is ideal for offering fruit and vegetables hygienically without them ending up on the substrate.
Maintenance — clean terrarium, healthy animal
Clean the terrarium partially weekly and thoroughly monthly. Always use a reptile-safe cleaning agent.
The Repto Glass Cleaner is specially developed for terrarium glass — no chemical residues, safe for your animal.
What you DON'T need as a beginner
- Expensive decoration before the basic setup is correct
- Multiple animals at once (first get to know one species)
- An oversized or too complex misting system for dry-climate species
- Live prey if you're not ready for it (thawed works fine for snakes)
✅ Checklist — save or print

- Terrarium of the correct size for your species
- UV lamp (species-specific — not all species need this)
- Heat lamp + thermostat
- Thermometer & hygrometer (measure on both sides)
- Substrate suitable for your species

- Water dish
- Artificial plants or decoration for cover
- Food + calcium/vitamin D3 supplement

Common beginner mistakes
Buying a terrarium that's too small. Reptiles grow — and too small a space causes chronic stress. Buy the final size directly.
No or incorrect UV lamp. Not all lamps emit UV-B. Always check specifications and replace lamps on time (even if they still light up — UV output decreases).
Buying an animal before the setup is ready. First fully set up the terrarium, let it stabilize for 48–72 hours at correct temperature and humidity, then bring your animal home.
