Building a Pond: Complete Beginner's Guide
Building a pond is an investment that provides years of enjoyment - provided you get the basics right. This guide takes you through the most important choices: location, size, filtration, and the first inhabitants.
Choosing the right location
Preferably choose a spot with partial shade. A pond in full sun heats up quickly and is more susceptible to algae growth, while too much shade can hinder plant growth. Avoid placing it directly under trees: falling leaves in autumn significantly disturb water quality.
Size and depth
The larger and deeper the pond, the more stable the water values and temperature - and the less maintenance you'll have in the long run. Rules of thumb:
- For a fish pond, plan for a minimum depth of 60 cm so the water doesn't freeze completely in winter.
- Want to keep koi? Then a significantly larger and deeper pond is needed - koi grow quickly and require a lot of swimming space.
- A shallower zone (20-30 cm) is ideal for marsh plants and provides fish with a warmer spot in spring.
Filtration and aeration
A good filter is essential as soon as fish are introduced to the pond. A pond filter purifies the water mechanically and biologically, similar to an aquarium filter but on a larger scale. For a well-stocked or larger pond, additional aeration with an air pump like the SuperFish Koi-Flow Air Kit is a valuable addition - especially in summer, when warm water holds less oxygen.
Maintaining water parameters
Just like with an aquarium, stable water quality is the foundation of a healthy pond. Regularly test for GH, KH, pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, and maintain the GH value with a product like GH-plus. You can read more about this in our article Preparing your pond for autumn.
The first fish
Allow the pond to cycle for several weeks before adding fish, so that a stable bacterial culture can develop - just like with an aquarium. Popular starter fish include:
- Goldfish - the classic, robust pond fish, suitable for year-round outdoor living
- Koi - more colorful and impressive, but with higher demands on pond size and water quality
Considering a sturgeon? Then first read our guide Keeping sturgeons - these fish have specific requirements for pond size and water flow.
Protection against predators
Herons and other birds quickly see a pond as a buffet. Shelter in the form of overhanging plants, a net, or sufficiently deep zones to hide in, will keep your fish stock safer.
