• In Aztec and Mayan culture, the jaguar was a symbol of night, death, and rebirth — the god of the underworld
• Melanistic (black) jaguars exist — their spots are visible in certain light, hence the name “black panther”

The jaguar has already lost more than 40% of its historical habitat. Deforestation in the Amazon — the heart of its range — is accelerating dramatically. Ranchers kill jaguars in retaliation for attacks on livestock, while illegal trade in jaguar parts for the Asian market is increasing. Without protection of its habitat and corridors between populations, the jaguar faces extinction in large parts of South America.
