What is Spiderwood?
Spiderwood is a type of wood with many fine branches and comes from China. This is the root of the rhododendron; this Asian root is harvested, dried, and stripped of its bark.
Because spiderwood is dried, it takes a little longer for it to sink to the bottom of your aquarium. To speed up this process, you can, for example, place a stone on it or attach a plexiglass sheet and slide it into the bottom.
This type of wood contains a lot of cellulose, making it a suitable food source for catfish.
Other names for spiderwood:
- Rote Moorwurzel,
- Redmoor Wood,
- Finger Wood,
- Azalea wood,
- Asian root wood.
Spiderwood is an ideal decorative element for your aquarium, its unique shape and structure give it a natural look.
Attaching plants to wood?
By covering the wood with various plant species, it becomes a real eye-catcher in your aquarium where smaller fish can also hide.
Plants suitable for binding to wood:
- Anubias
- Bucephalandra
- Bolbitus Heudelotii
- Bolbitis Heteroclita Difformis
- Hygrophila Pinnatifida
- Microsorum Pteropus
- Microsorum Pteropus Specie
- Microsorum Pteropus Latifolia
- Microsorum Pteropus Petit
- Moss species
You can attach plants to the wood using fishing line, staples, string, tie-wraps and plant glue.
White mold?
If Spiderwood is placed in the aquarium, mold may occur.
This is caused by bacteria that were present in the wood. These bacteria, when exposed to oxygen, initiate a decomposition process. The residual product is an oily substance that appears as a white slime.
This process takes a few weeks and the white layer will disappear by itself.
